GENERAL FUNCTION: Provide direct, comprehensive general dental care and education to eligible PTHA patients.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
The essential duties and responsibilities regularly assigned to this position include:
* Perform annual exams to diagnose dental diseases.
* Provide general dental care services to correct or treat dental diseases and deficiencies.
* Provide urgent care services to patients to relieve pain, bleeding, and swelling.
* Evaluate, construct, and insert fixed and removable prosthodontics appliances for patients in coordination with dental lab.
* Make referrals to appropriate sources for specialized care and monitor through follow-up.
* Provide dental health education to patients, families, and PTHA staff.
* Provide supervision to chair-side dental assistants.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS (EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE): Graduate from an accredited school of dentistry and a current license to practice dentistry.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Sensitivity to and knowledge of Indian customs, traditions, and culture. In-depth knowledge of dental restorative, endodontic, and oral surgery practices and procedures. Proficiency at application techniques for crowns and bridges. Knowledge of general office procedures. Able to perform child and adult prophys, OHI, fluoride treatments, and placement of sealant and rubber dams. Able to interact courteously and professionally with patients of all ages. Knowledge of current home care instructions and ability to communicate them effectively to patients.

AGE SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES: Must be able to demonstrate knowledge, skill and ability necessary to provide care to specific age groups served in her/his assigned area.

INFECTION CONTROL RESPONSIBILITIES: Follow facility policies and attend in-services as appropriate. Use established procedures for exposure to blood borne pathogens and body fluids.

SAFETY RESPONSIBILITIES: Follow facility policies and attend in-services as appropriate. Use established procedures for working around x-rays and handling and disposing of sharps. Proper operatory safety procedures. Current certification in CPR.

ROLES IN THE HAZARDOUS MATERIAL PROGRAM: Follow facility policies and attend in-services as appropriate. Use established procedures in handling and disposing of infectious materials, mercury, lead, and hazardous chemicals.

ACTIVITIES UNIQUE TO THE WORK SETTING OF THIS POSITION: Work is performed on a Native American Indian reservation in an urban environment.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: Supervise chair-side dental assistants during delivery of patient care.

MACHINES, TOOLS, EQUIPMENT AND/OR OFFICE MACHINERY UTILIZED: Standard office equipment and computer programs. Standard dental operatory equipment and instruments, including various handpieces, dental x-ray units, magna clave, kavoclave, dentronix, x-ray developer, panorex machine, and ultrasonic. Routine office equipment including computer.

WORKING CONDITIONS: Duties performed indoors in office setting.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Able to lift 30 lbs. Extended periods of sitting and standing. Frequent bending and reaching. Manual dexterity to work in small areas and with small instruments and materials.
